As an artist and as a person, Steve Schousen found beauty in what he described as “juxtaposing highly structured and defined areas with ambiguous, open” ones. His lifelong pursuit of exploring the space between clarity and uncertainty gave rise to a body of work that, like life itself, was never truly finished.
Now, in the wake of his unexpected death, we—his family and friends—find ourselves picking up the pieces and carrying his journey forward. In doing so, we are discovering new ways to share, reflect upon, and see through the many perspectives contained within what he left behind.
This collection is organized around four ideas that capture something essential about the way Steve created art, lived, and saw the world: Wander. Observe. Belong. Create.
Together, they reflect his curiosity, his connection to nature and community, his willingness to follow a path wherever it led.
We are excited to share a selection of Steve’s work through these four concepts, as a record of what he created and a catalyst to your own memories and creative impulses.
